WHAT IS INFECTION CONTROL?

Infection Control is a discipline concerned with preventing healthcare-associated infections.

It is a sub-discipline of epidemiology, akin to public health practice. Infection control was previously considered to be practiced within the confines of a healthcare setting, but today infection control has become very much part of public health in the community following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Infection control is an essential part of the infrastructure of healthcare and now community health.

The purpose of infection prevention and control is to identify and reduce the risk of infections in the community.

In the healthcare setting, the purpose of infection prevention is to reduce the risk of infections among patients, employees, medical staff, contract workers, and visitors.
