Are Healthcare-associated Infections (HAI) Preventable?

This is the question on people’s minds when their hospital stay is complicated by an unexpected infection during or post medical or surgical care.

The short answer is Yes. According to a major study, up to 32% of all HAI are preventable. The other 2/3 of the infections may be inevitable due to the following reasons:
1. Patient’s poor underlying condition and severe illness
2. Impaired immunity
3. Inherent risk associated with medical or surgical intervention.
