It takes about twenty seconds, costs almost nothing, and needs no special equipment. Washing your hands with soap remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and those around you from illness.
Today, 15 October, is Global Handwashing Day. The day was initiated by the Global Handwashing Partnership in 2008 to promote a global and local vision of handwashing with soap. This year, the campaign carries on with its theme, “Be a Handwashing Hero.”
Why heroes?
Heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes they stand at a sink and scrub their hands properly before lunch.
Every wash interrupts the spread of germs. When you wash your hands, you protect your own health, and you also protect a classmate with a weak immune system, a grandparent at home, a baby sibling, or a teacher who can’t afford to miss work. Good hygiene looks after the whole community, and that is why this small habit matters so much.
The moments that count
You don’t need to wash constantly. You need to wash at the right times:
- Before eating or handling food
- After using the toilet
- After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
- After touching shared surfaces, such as door handles, keyboards, and lift buttons
- After being outdoors, playing sport, or handling pets
- Before and after caring for someone unwell
Twenty seconds to a better wash
- Wet your hands with clean water.
- Lather with soap, covering the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub for at least 20 seconds. Hum a favourite chorus twice if you need a timer.
- Rinse thoroughly under running water.
- Dry with a clean towel or air dry.
Soap and water are the gold standard. Hand sanitiser is a useful backup when a sink isn’t available, but it isn’t a full replacement for a proper wash.
Our challenge to the STS Academia community
Being a handwashing hero takes more than knowing the steps. This week, we invite you to:
- Practise it. Make handwashing an automatic part of your daily routine.
- Pass it on. Show a younger sibling, a friend, or a family member how to wash properly. Habits spread the same way germs do, only for better results.
- Speak up kindly. If you see a soap dispenser running empty, tell a teacher or staff member.
- Think beyond our campus. Many people around the world still lack easy access to soap and clean water. Learning about that gap is the first step towards caring about it.
One small act, a big difference
Global Handwashing Day is a reminder that some of the strongest public health tools are also the simplest. Our community stays healthier when every one of us takes a few seconds to do the right thing, again and again, without being asked.
So today, wash with purpose, and be the hero your classmates, teachers, and families can count on.
Happy Global Handwashing Day from all of us at STS Academia!
